TREES & SHRUBS

Plant out shrubs that are tender when young (arbutus, choisya, fuchsia & hydrangea) & keep well watered until established. Complete planting evergreens in showery weather. Keep newly planted shrubs moist at the roots & spray foliage with water in dry weather. Keep lilacs to a single stem & mulch heavily to induce them to flower.
Pruning
Cut off dead flower heads & thin out weak shoots from shrubs that have finished flowering. Remove dead wood & thin shoots to keep old forsythias shapely & within bounds. Clip Laurus nobilis (bay) where grown as a formal bush.
