Frequent hoeing around the plants keeps weeds in check & conserves moisture. Make it a routine operation throughout the season, whether the plants are grown naturally or on the cordon system. During prolonged dry weather, especially if the soil is on the light side, remove all weeds, water thoroughly, & then place a mulch of peat or well decayed manure around cordon plants. This keeps the roots cool, conserves moisture, & restricts weed growth. Tie cordon-grown plants to their canes as they grow, using either twine or galvanised wire rings. Pinch out the first few flowers while they are tiny, but leave the little stems, bearing four buds, which will soon appear. |
